The Bestofme Symphony
That's pronounced "Best o' Me", by the way, and it's my idea for a new meme. There's all sorts of compilation memes for current content such as
The Carnival of the Vanities and its offspring or Kate's
Letter of the Day and
Hunting of the Snark. We've even got LeeAnn's new
Monday Madness and
The Cheddar X that drive new content. But what is there for old stuff? Those really great posts from a couple of months or a year ago that new readers don't know about or that even regular readers would like to see again (if only they remembered)? Nuthin, that's what!

I like it. I always feel like my best stuff is lurking way back in my archives and I don't even really HAVE any archives to speak of, but you know?--It just seems like the day I really think I hit it out of the park it's like, a Sunday or some day when no one reads anything, and then the good post gets buried under a mound of crap because I start posting new stuff just to keep it updated. Ugh.

I like it. The best part about resurrecting stuff from the past is looking at things you wrote back when and trying to figure out what brought THAT up at the time. Nothing younger than two months sounds good.

Okay, I think I'm going to go with it. I don't want to start during the holiday weekend since bloguse is so light. I'll muster support (email harrassment) next week and we'll get this meme launched the following week.
What is the best day of the week for a new complilation meme? I don't want to compete with the Carnivals or any of the other big boys.

Lesse, Friday is the Friday Five, Monday is Monday Memory, not sure really what days Bonfire or Carnival are, and isn't Cheddar X on Thursdays? Weekends, while pretty much open, have little to offer since blogging is lighter on weekends.... my vote is Mondays, since mine is a mere tadpole and unlikely to suck away any notice from yours.

My "Best of" has gone the way of the Dodo Bird -- due in part to the fact that I have a vicious ex-wife lurking and monitoring my every post. (Most posts referencing my husband -- her EX HUSBAND) have been removed.
I would LOVE to send you one -- but it doesn't fit your criteria.
I think, however, it is a SMASHING idea, darlink.
Mondays are a good day -- but what about Hump Day? Nobody has one of those Memes yet, do they? (I'm -- as always -- hopelessly out of touch.)
We have Wednesday Recycle day here. Just throwing out ideas. . . .LOL

I'll start advertising this coming Monday for the first edition to start the Monday next. Don't want to get it lost in the holiday lull after all.
You've got plenty o' stuff, Margi! Why, you've got at least 3 posts about Snooze Button Dreams. Those are all golden. ;-)

Wednesday is the Carnival of the Vanities so that's a definite no-no. Blog Mela is Thursdays. Friday 5, Cheddar X and SnarkHunt are on Friday. Tuesday is the Bonfire of the Vanities and (I think) the Carnival of the Capitalists. Monday is the only day that's really clear of a conglomeration/multi-post type meme.
Posted by: Jim at November 29, 2003 11:40 PM (fkewd)
9
Hey! What about Monday Memory? Is that not a conglomeration/multi-post type meme?
Okay, lemme rephrase... is that not a wanna-be conglomeration/multi-post type meme?
Monday is a big day, there's plenty of room for memeage.
Posted by: LeeAnn at November 30, 2003 08:18 PM (HxCeX)

Monday Memory is more of the assignment/trackback format, like Cheddar X and Friday 5. With the Bestofme Symphony being the conglomeration style the two should be able to coexist peacefully. ;-)

Descriptions? We don't need no stinkin' descriptions!
I've replaced the weblog description at the top of the main page with a random thought. This weblog defies description anyway.

Sidebar stuff
Made one last change for the collapsable lists, hopefully they'll work for Mozillans now. If not, I haven't a clue where else to go with them. But the links are still there for them, they just don't get them nice and tight and collapsed, so I'm going to keep them either way.
Speaking of collapsable lists, I've moved "Best of" to a collapsed list and expanded it with entries from other categories. There's only one recipe post right now but there will be more. And of course there is only one Bageldonut and so long as we stay in God's good graces there shall never be another.
I had to get rid of that graphic for the Guest Map. Any time I saw this site it was there flashing at me. I despise animated graphics on web sites. Flash is good. Animated gifs blow. So now it's just a link and will get less attention but oh well, such is life. I'd rather have less people sign it and have it not annoy me than vice versa.
The Recent Posts section was removed as well. It only duplicates the posts on the front page and last time I asked nobody admitted to using it. Clutter. Gone.
And I finally added Survivor to the sidebar. Woo Hoo! It was my intent from the beginning of the game but I am horribly, horribly lazy.
My wishlist is linked too. Not that I'm expecting loads of presents but this way you can check out the wierdness that is on my list to Santa.
Last but not least, the Ecosystem doohicky is there too. Don't know if I'll keep that or not but I figured I'd give it a shot. I don't like the way it shows up on multilines unnecessarily. Anybody know a way to get that so it's just a regular line of text instead of 4 lines?

Nothing collapsable in Mozilla 1.4, or Firebird .7
all lists are expanded.
You know, you could just download Firebird/Mozilla yourself....
Once you do, you'll never go back to Internet Exploder....

I've tried Mozilla. It didn't stick with me. It's too unforgiving and there are too many "slightly off" websites out there.
And then there's stuff like my collapsable lists. It's standard script, why can't Mozilla handle it? Very frustrating.
Posted by: Jim at November 22, 2003 08:38 AM (fkewd)

I don't need your lists collapsed anyway, Jim, so don't worry about it! I like seeing the whole deal...

Jim:
No collapse in Firebird 0.7 here either. In IE6, the lists display expanded, but do collapse when the category is clicked.
Just download Firebird as a secondary browser. Don't give it default status & it stays out of the way quite nicely.
Faster'n waiting for us!

Jimbo: I'm using IE 6.0.2800.1106 and everything works fine for me. As far as I'm concerned, program for IE and let the Mozilla Monsters switch broswers. How the fuck are you supposed to code for every different flavor of browser under the sun and still maintain the functions and bells and whistles that YOU want to include? Nothing against the Mozilla users, but they are out of the mainstream. I wonder if they are using Macs?

Paul - At home I'm on Lovely Wife's laptop until I get our monster desktop functioning again. One does not install programs on Lovely Wife's laptop. ;-)
Bartender - These collapsable lists are the only whistle I'm blowing. It would be nice to have everybody be able to use them. But the thing that tweaks me is that I can't find out WHY they don't work in Mozilla. I thought the latest tweak would do it but it has obvioulsy failed.

I know this is stating the obvious, but...
If Netscape does not need a localhost breach
in the firewall and a very anoying startup delay,
then why do IE and Mozilla?
When our firewall blocks this invasive traffic
(upon startup of Mozilla) it actually functions
much better with only one open port.
Mozilla is a great package but would be even
better if they got rid of the startup traffic and
"mozilla" sign. Like we need to be reminded
of the name for 10-15 seconds of every start.
Can someone fix this? Perhaps in version
1.7.2

I got a Meryl link!
Maybe censorship isn't all bad after all. My own encounter with it really brought out some great discussion and showed me that when push comes to shove there are people out there who'll stand up for me (at least when I'm right). That's so cool.
And it's given me something very precious. A link from Meryl Yourish!
Please note that anybody who attributes sarcasm to that exclamation will be virtually slapped upside the head by yours truly. Meryl's was the first blog I ever followed seriously. This was before I really even knew what the hell a blog was. She's been over in my "Daily Reads" since this blog's first incarnation as "Apropos of Nothing" (which nobody even knows about, that's how bad it was).
So getting a link from Meryl is very super cool to me. And to make it even better, she's in support of my position.
Thanks, Meryl!

There is no porno video on this site
I've had over 2000 hits from people searching for that porn video of a certain hotel heiress. It's not here!
For all of you folks who came here looking for it - sorry you wasted your time. The closest thing I have is The Somnolence of Clouds. It has sex and nudity and there's even a certain amount of controversy over it. Go check it out. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Update: Over 7000 visitors looking for a porn video that isn't here. Gawd. Remind me never to comment on porn videos again.

Dude.
When I checked your stats earlier this week (it is my goal to always beat you and Don) you were averaging about 398 hits a day. Now it's 2000.
If you'll excuse me, I am going to go post about Paris Hilton's sex video, Mary Kate and Ashley Olson, and Orlando Bloom. Possibly all having sex, but really, it's all about being a hit whore.
Posted by: Helen at November 14, 2003 02:25 AM (ADrg6)

One more person complains about the astonishing number of hits he had that day [click] . . . .
I'm going to title my next post I Fucked Paris Hilton and see what happens. Of course, that one won't be easy to explain to mom and dad, but luckily they find most of what I write too boring for them to check in regularly.
Posted by: ilyka at November 14, 2003 05:08 AM (9UvaM)
3
It's serious, Ilyka. They're not real hits and I don't want 'em. Except that they let me beat Helen and Don, of course. That's cool.
But they totally screw my numbers. I do keep a loose eye on my site popularity and now I've got no clue what's going on. I would really have liked to see what effect the censorship deal really had on my traffic but it's not even a blip in the porn traffic.
On the plus side I can now say with assurety that random porn searches are approximately 3 times as powerful as the Instapundit.

I would really have liked to see what effect the censorship deal really had on my traffic but it's not even a blip in the porn traffic.
Yeah, that'd cheese me off.
Question: am I the only one who cares more about page views, length of time spent reading, etc., than about actual number of visits?
I don't think I care that much after all about the number of visitors, really. I want to know that the people who came, stayed a while, and actually read more than one linked post.
Am I also the only one who's sometimes happier to get an unknown referrer visit (the ones where they just typed in the URL themselves, I mean) than an oh-so-and-so-sent-us visit? I think it's cool if someone actually remembers the address and goes there without prodding, personally.
Posted by: ilyka at November 14, 2003 07:01 AM (9UvaM)
6
No, you're not the only one, Ilyka. I think that the time aboard is probably the most important stat too. Of course the porn stream has totally blown that away. And I really like when the referrer is another page from my site, meaning the reader is really cruising through and looking around, or at least opening extended entries to read the longer posts.
Posted by: Jim at November 14, 2003 07:30 AM (fkewd)
7
at least opening extended entries to read the longer posts.
You've reminded me of the surest way to kill off my own traffic: Post two-parters. Never mind that journalspace imposes a bullshit character limit that sometimes forces me to do it if I have a lot to say--people see "part I" and run screaming. I can't even blame them, either, because if I go to someone's blog and they say, "Go read Steven den Beste today," I get all stubborn and think, "No. That font is too small and his essays are too long and I will not either go read it. You can't make me." So why I think it's totally okay for me to post two-parters, I don't know. I just have to do it every once in awhile.
Your extended entries are especially fun, though, because I literally never know WHAT I'm going to get. It's like opening presents.

No, I check length of stays, too. They average a few minutes, which I love. To me, it means that people stick around and READ-since I tend to be a bit verbose, I take it as a good sign.

I've been hearing about this crazy hot video of the over rich and incredibly pretentiously named Paris Hilton getting jabbed in some hotel room. And I've actually avoided it on the blog precisely because I know the flood of hits that one can generate from just a mention.
I topped out at 16,000 hits in a day when the Kobe trial first hit. It was amazing.

Blogwork, Begging
Well I finally took a couple of minutes to gather a "best of Snooze" list and stuck it in the sidebar. Hopefully that will help new visitors to decide on making SBD a regular stop (or adding it to the NetNanny filter). Also bumped down the archive section and the recent posts section. Thinking of removing the recent posts section. Does anybody actually use this?
And, most importantly, I've come to the decision that my blog looks like crappola. I got half way into making it presentable until I realized that it was more actual effort than I was willing to put into it so it's stuck half way between a basic outline of a scheme and what I was going for.
Being a logical sort I've come to the conclusion that my skills as a website designer are pretty lowsy. Back when Notepad was high tech I was right in the forefront of web design. These days I'm still using Notepad. Say no more.
So, I will swallow my pride and ask for somebody to do the work for me assistance. Anybody out there that can give me a clean and fairly unique style sheet for my blog? The only requirements are a single sidebar setup, white or very light for the bulk of the background (posting area) and no pastels. Teal is cool. Pastel green is not.
Your reward shall be your noted presence in my sidebar in a "Site designed by" section thingy. And my undying gratitude, of course.
I could use a decent header graphic too if anybody's interested. Apart or with a workable style.

Actually, I think your blog looks just fine. Most blogs try to have all this cool web-design shit, and it just adds to the clutter. To all bloggers: I didn't go to your blog to see the "pretty colors," I go there to read what you have to say because it's either thoughtful and intelligent, funny as all hell, or mercilessly makes fun of liberals (in the case of SBD, I usually get all three!). But hey, you wanna rearrange the furniture, it's your house!
By the way, you asked if anybody ever uses the "Recent Posts" section. I, for one, do not. If I wanna see a recent post, that's what scrolling down is for.
