Here it is - Friday already. Sweet!
Let's start the day with a slice of Cheddar X.
1. What's your favorite form of corporate or governmental irony? (I.e. a bike company called Huffy)
My favorite form of irony? I didn't realize there were different forms. I guess "blatant" would be my favorite form.
By the way, Huffy isn't ironic since it's expected that you would huff while using a bike. It's clever or maybe pedantic but not ironic. Irony carries a connotation of the unexpected, obverse or morbid. Irony is hard (very very hard) to pull off. A better example would be an auto company called "Walkers". Now that's ironic.
2. What are your favorite acronyms?
Favorite acronyms? Um...I guess BFNAR (see next question) is up there. QA (Quality Assurance) is sort of close to my heart. MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) is kind of neat but it's not one I'd ever need to use. I guess I don't really have any "favorite" acronyms. Some I use, some I don't, I generally don't feel very strongly about any of them. Is it normal to not think a whole lot about acronyms?
Oh, wait! I thought of one. My absolute favorite acronym is "USA".
3. Do you have personal acronyms? What are they?
TSTL = Too Stupid To Live. BFNAR = Braking For No Apparent Reason.
4. Where do you shop online?
Target, WalMart, and Amazon mostly. If I need to get something I price it out and do model critique/selection on one of those sites. Occasionally I search for stuff on eBay/Half.com to see if it's out there at all and get a rough estimate of what it's worth. I'll also hit Dell or Gateway every once in a while to price out a dream machine. Same thing with some of the auto manufacturers.
5. What do you buy online?
Nada. I haven't made any purchases online in years except for my domain names and a couple games I bought for Lovely Wife.
6. What would you do if you were falsely accused of shoplifting?
I'd go with the security guy and let them search me to show them that I didn't take anything. I've worked with store security before and they're just doing their jobs. Cooperate and everything goes smoothly. Make a fuss and they do too. If I didn't get some apologies and thank yous afterwards I'd likely not shop at that store again and I'd let the management know why but if they were professional and polite I'd be understanding.
7. What's your take on Feng Shui? Hooey or truey?
I've got no idea. I honestly only know the barest bit about it that I've picked up from homophobic comedy. Something about the way things are arranged can be soothing and promote health? Sounds reasonable, I guess. You live in a chaotic pit and it's going to affect you adversely. If you live in totally sterility (the white couch, white carpet, white walls thing) and it's going to do bad things to your mental state too.
POINTS: I've told a fib. One of those entries up there isn't true. Can you figure out which one? Each person may guess once and there will be one point awarded for each person who participates. Points go to the people who guessed correctly. So if 10 people guess and 2 got it right, those 2 people would each get 5 points. Cool, eh?
Some time this weekend we'll wrap up the contest and give away the points.
Please note: If I'm commenting on the one that's a lie I'm still going to be lying to support the lie so you won't know that it was the entry that was a lie. Confused yet? I sure am!
Don't forget that you can stick your email address in that box in the sidebar under the Snooze Point Leaders and you'll get notified whenever points are available.
Results:
#1 - True. If irony isn't blatant it really isn't ironic. Irony is already very hard to pull off. When people get too clever with it, it falls quickly and easily to different forms of pedantry. Good examples of honest attempts gone wrong are the Huffy Bikes example from the question itself and the ones in MojoMark's comment. All have a twist of humor but none of them were ironic.
#2 - It's true. I don't give much thought at all to acronyms at all. I at least respect "USA" and that's more emotion that I give to any other acronym so that one's my favorite. Sorry Jeremy & Clancy - better luck next time.
#5 - True, true, true. I haven't shopped for real online since 2000 or so when I was still buying lots of cheap computer stuff. Pretty much all that stuff I bought for cheap is useless now and some is even holding valuable data that I can no longer get too. It's safer if I don't shop online. No luck this week Trey and tommy.
#7 is the bogus entry. I know as much as I care to about Feng Shui and it's a whole heapload of crap as far as I'm concerned. My chi will be stulted if I have my aquarium on the wrong side of the room? Bite me and my plecostamus.
Mike the Marine and Tiffani both got it right. With seven people competing that's (hmmm...seven divided by two...carry the three...round the remainder...convert back from imaginary number...minus the GNP of Brazil...) 4 points each using the New Math (tm). Congrats!
