Bring out your dead

Can you imagine how much people must have stunk in the middle ages?

Most people had one set of clothes. They slept in them, they worked in them and God knows what else. Their underwear must have been absolutely disgusting.

I suppose the rich and the nobility took a lot of baths, but the average serf must have stunk to the high heavens.

I really need to focus my thoughts in a more productive direction.

1 Actually, underwear was a luxury that most couldn't afford. Now you know where perfume came from.

2 Not to hijack this post, but - the real question is - whatever happened to this kind of timeless humor? What was last movie you saw with lines this memorable: ... I'm not dead! 'Ere. He says he's not dead! Yes, he is. I'm not! He isn't? Well, he will be soon. He's very ill. I'm getting better! No, you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment. Oh, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations. I don't want to go on the cart! Oh, don't be such a baby. I can't take him. I feel fine! ...

3 That's also why in some Midieval and early Renaissance portraits, you see the person seated with a small pet - something for the fleas and pestilence resultant of the person's hippie-istic bathing habits to be more attracted to. But that being said, I mean, there are still a lot of people in this world who smell bad and don't bathe on the regular: the aforementioned hippie crowd, kids between the ages of seven and 10, the French, Jenelle Spinster - the list goes on for miles!

4 Actually, affording it had nothing to do with it...it just wasn't around.

6 If my memory of school days is correct, they also thought bathing was unhealthy. Would make them get sick, which during above-mentioned times would/could be deadly. As if the stench would keep the Koodies away! I think NOT!
